The Very Best Way to buy Organics
We have discussed starting our own organic gardens as well as shared gardening. These two options are the perfect way to ensure your produce is born and raised exactly the way you would prefer it. But, some of us lack the time and know how to produce our own produce (if you will). If this is the case for you, (like it is me) there is yet another option..
Its called community sponsored agriculture or CSA. Tucked away in the corners of your area there are likely small farms that you may not even know exist! These farms are the ones that supply your farmers markets and the restaurants in your town that boast locally raised foods. Typically these farms offer a subscription that enables you to receive a box of fresh, organic, locally grown, seasonal produce weekly. Picture this, you and your family roll up to your local farm every week and pick up a delicious selection of in season foods for you to get creative and formulate your own recipes with! If you have kiddos this is an amazing opportunity to provide them a connection between the farm and the foods they eat, I bet you might have better luck getting them to eat their veggies it they know they came from their farm. A family activity to look forward to every week!
CSAs aren’t confined to produce. Some farmers include the option for subscribers to buy fresh eggs, homemade bread, meat, cheese, fruit, flowers or other farm products along with their veggies. Sometimes several farmers will offer their products together, to offer the widest variety to their members. For example, a produce farmer might create a partnership with a neighbor to deliver fresh eggs to the CSA drop off point, so that the CSA members can purchase farm-fresh eggs when they come to get their CSA baskets. Its a simple concept, but the results have been profound. Many families and individuals have made the choice to subscribe to CSA’s in their area. Doing this stimulates your local economy and allows you to enjoy the nutrient dense, fresh flavors of the season.
